There are a number of companies and organizations that are part of the utility pole treating industry. These include associations that represent specific sectors of the industry.
The manufacturing and use of preservative-treated utility poles in electrical distribution is guided by national consensus standards in both the U.S. and Canada. There are also independent third-party inspection agencies that work to ensure utility poles meet this standards for product performance.
Since utility poles are essential to the infrastructure in North America, they are manufactured to remain in service for many decades. Over time, the protection built into these poles may need to be enhanced to further extend the service life. There are a number of companies that assist utilities in remediating poles to maintain their serviceability.
